-Rubberband Ball
The Rubberband Ball
The rubberband ball is currently not in the great condition it used to be. It has been tucked away in a hot attic for about 6 years, lost and forgotten. Until recently (2008).
The ball started around 1997 sometime. I was young and waiting at a bus stop, probably headed too or from school. A fellow human child was next to me, I saw that he was making a ball of rubberbands. And to make a short story shorter, I showed interest in making my own. He took me under his wing and showed me how to start one. It was a lesson I will never forget. This kid then gave me a handful of rubberbands, he seemed to pull them out of thin air like Jesus. Needless to say, the rest of my day I was entertained. Who needs to learn fractions when I can wrap bands of rubber around itself several hundred times? Much more fun!
I would continue to work on it for several years. I have to stress though that the rubberbands on the ball were never bought by myself. They were all found, whether it was on the street, fell from the sky (true story), came attached to some sort of consumer product, or donated by kind relatives. People I knew started saving all the rubberbands they would find, and then give them to me. If I had bought rubberbands, the whole experience would have been much less rewarding, and the ball could have potentially been much more massive.
Eventually I moved, so the ball got put in a box with a bunch of other random junk and then forgotten about. When I stumbled upon the rubberband ball recently, it had lost a lot of weight. It was sitting on a mound of its own remains. Rubberbands were cracked and brittle from the heat and temperature changes, snapping and settling at the base of the ball.
