I spent awhile trying to decide how I wanted to get into the first level of the treehouse. I had quite a few differnt ideas. I wanted to avoid just a straight ladder up, I also didn't want a huge set of elaborate stairs. Some people just use a rope to climb up, then abseil (or repel) up and down. This might work for some, and although it does sound quite fun, it's not really the route of choice I was looking for.


Basically, to avoid using just a straight up and down ladder, I put a platform about half way up between the ground and the first level, with 2 sets of ladders at an angle on either side of the platform. But I didn't want the bottom ladder to be in the way(on the ground all the time), so I hooked it up to a counterweight with 2 pulleys and a good length of rope. One end of rope was tied to the bottom of the ladder, the other end tied off to the counterweight. Although it was originally a log I had laying nearby, I eventually upgraded to a nicer looking mesh-net of rocks.
